I was trying to collect some extra chairs for the party this weekend from the 2 neighbors I like. The guys three doors down from us have 30 folding chairs in their basement for some reason no one can remember. So, I spend a long time today lugging them down the street. Afterwards they showed me their newly converted “media room” complete with reclining chairs and one of those cool projectors. You know, the kind that let’s you display things from a TV, computer, DVD player or whatever on the wall.

It was pretty neat, I must say. The picture from the projector was really clear, and you can move it anywhere you want.

So, of course, I spent time this afternoon when I should have been working reading projector reviews and trying to figure out how quickly I can get one. If anyone would like to give me a gift, take the hint.

Today the boyfriend is doing research on cigars to buy – mid priced but reasonable quality. I’m really thinking about the smell in our furniture.

Hopefully the weather will be reasonable and we can have all the smoking outside.

Meanwhile, I really need to get going on some of the food preparation.

I woke up at 5:30 this morning, with a sore back and a bad mood. So, I spent some time trying to cheer myself up with some shopping.

I found some great diamonds for my mother’s birthday, a bunch of cute stuff for the bridal shower next week, and of course, a few things for myself.

Went to a baby shower this afternoon. Was generally a good time because the mother to be is a fun person, and didn’t insist on any lame games. We just ate, drank, and opened her gifts.

The thing that surprised me is how lame some of the things people bought were. My friend didn’t register because she didn’t care that much, so everyone was on their own. Her sister had the best gift, this sweet Ergo baby carrier thing that I can’t really describe.

But at least 4 of the 25 people in attendance gave her what I’m referring to as sassy onesies. You know the ones I mean, with the slightly cheeky or funny sayings. She hated them, I could tell. That kind of thing only works for the right person, and my friend is not one to dress her son in snarky clothing. For the record, I got her a gift certificate for a postpartum massage.

So, the boyfriend and I have decided that with his impending unemployment, and my working from home, we need to figure out how to avoid spending too much time together. Neither of us are particularly moody, but too much togetherness makes couples snappy with each other.

Right now we’re trying to do separate friend things, which is hard because we share a lot of friends. I think splitting up errands and shopping will help too. Like, I don’t need to participate in buying multivitamins for men with him, and he doesn’t need to go with me to drop of dry-cleaning. Well, that’s a bad example because we’re about to be broke and dry-cleaning is definitely one of the first expenses to get cut. But, you get the idea.

It’s nice to be trying this in a friend;y way, instead of a get the hell out of my face all the time way.

The boyfriend is doing well too. Right now I’m trying to learn a bit about log furniture, for two reasons. First, I never knew it existed. And second, because it is, in fact, awesome.

And the third non-reason is that you know how obsessive I can be. Which can be a useful personality trait in times of stress like this, because I get hyper-focused on something.

That’s my new diagnosis for Little Sister. She’s suffering from a serious case of bridal laziness. Well, she’s not actually suffering, but everyone else is. J is coordinating pretty much everything from Philly. Little Sister’s mother is doing the hard stuff, compiling addresses for guests and such. And in a prime example of this disease I just made up, Little Sister has tasked me with picking out the bridesmaid gifts.

Now, on one hand – hooray! I get to pick out my own gift. Gotta love that. But it does kind of spoil the surprise. I told her to just buy us new cars, but she refused. Some people. I think I’ll probably choose a nice bottle of wine or a reasonably priced set of earrings we can wear for the wedding. J was telling me that she got a gift certificate for a store she hates for an ex-friend’s wedding. No mystery why that friendship is ex, right?

Not the kind caused by margarita slurping (assuming you engage in that kind of shameless behavior). I mean where your brain just stops working. It could be in the middle of a sentence, or as you’re sitting at a traffic light.

For me, it happened this morning in the grocery store. I was thinking about the stuff I needed to rewrite about a new thermogenic fat burner, what results I wanted to include and which medical sources to check. Then, suddenly, when it was my time to check out, I checked out.

I’d lost my discount card a couple of weeks ago and keep forgetting to grab the boyfriend’s when I shop. The guy asked for my phone number to use instead, and I had no idea what it was. I just stared at him for a good 20 seconds.

He clearly thought I was stupid or high, and just used a different card for my discounts.

For the record, I do know what my phone number is, but now I have to find a new grocery store to shop at.

I’m writing from New York, where I’ve just spent the last 2 days helping my dear friend S take care of her adorable new twins, Gregory and Grace. My friend and her partner have been trying to adopt for three years, and their babies finally came home last week.

I’m staying for the rest of the week and then meeting the boyfriend and others in NJ for Memorial Day. Today I’m going shopping to get some baby clothes of course, and some new mommy survival items (wine and junk food).

I will be eschewing the tired dress twins alike silliness. They can do it when they’re old enough to choose to.

Have I mentioned my former patio furniture obsession has returned? It has. And is stronger than ever. I’m having the hardest time finding stuff that is nice, durable, easy to clean, comfortable, and cute.

Now that I’ve typed that whole list it does seem like a lot to ask, but still. I mean, there’s tons of new furniture in the house that fits those criteria. Why is it so hard to find the same for the back yard?

I was walking by a store this morning and saw a single ottoman that looked perfect, but of course the set that matched it was both ridiculously expensive, and way too big for the space we have. Sigh. Life is so hard (that’s sarcasm).
