Suck it, music snobs
Written by Jen on December 17, 2009 – 9:28 amI don’t mean the classic music snob, who only likes bands who’ve never had a record deal, or been on MTV. Though, fuck them too. I mean people who talk about what kind of music you’re allowed to like. Like black people can only like hip hop and R&B. Old black people can like jazz too. But no country music. Whatever.
Like what you like. In the 90s when grunge music came out, I loved it as much as any white kid in the Pacific Northwest. Because I’m a middle class semi suburban kid. I grew up in Philadelphia, but our neighborhood is on the city line. And I went to private school. Rap from that era just didn’t connect with me, I liked what did.
My tastes are pretty broad and random now, and I like that. One of my favorite bands is The Pietasters. Love their shit. These guys put on such a great live show. Here’s a sample:
And yes, I’m aware that ska started in Jamaica in the 60s, but the good 3rd wave ska bands respect that history and that rocks. Plus, fun music.

The most wonderful time of the year
Written by SBF on December 8, 2009 – 3:30 pmI’ll admit it. I’m a rabid consumer. Especially at this time of year. I get little gifts for everyone. It isn’t about spending a lot of money, I just love the whole process of holiday shopping. With one large exception. The music. (J, don’t kill me for this). Having every elevator, street corner, and store playing aggressively cheerful holiday music gives me a headache. So, I spend most of December walking around town with headphones on, listening to anything else, loudly.
So, while I will happily spend hours picking out candy for clients, scarves for my cousins, a playstation 3 for the boyfriend (not really), and bottles of booze for my pals, I do it with crappy R&B from the late 90s in my ears.

Secret
Written by SBF on October 17, 2009 – 8:27 amCouple of things today:
First, my ever expanding random knowledge continues. This week we added a bunch of things. First, life insurance leads and sandwich names. More on that later.
And second, today’s song of the day is:
Secret by Maroon 5 (not chosen by me). Still looking for a video, but lyrics are after the break… Read more »

Face Up and Sing
Written by Jen on July 11, 2009 – 10:12 amI practically fell out of my chair when this song came up in my iTunes rotation because it made me realize that this is exactly how I felt about my old moss, queen of passivity. Replace sing with speak and you’ve got it perfectly. I wonder if I could send her an mp3, see if she gets the message. Craziness. Read more »

Cinco De Mayo
Written by Jen on May 5, 2009 – 10:59 amAs the owner of this blog is too busy unpacking or whatever the hell she’s doing to recognize one of our favorite holidays, I’ll do it for her. To quote her from Mardi Gras,
I know I should say something about the rich cultural history of New Orleans and blah blah blah, but I just like excuses to drink a lot. You’ll notice a deep connection to St. Patrick’s day as well, and Cinco de Mayo.
Why respect cultures when you can appropriate their holidays as an excuse to binge drink?
Amen, sister!
Honestly, while I do plan to enjoy fake cultural drinking today, Cinco de Mayo really just makes me think of this Liz Phair song: Read more »

American Pie
Written by SBF on April 14, 2009 – 10:16 amHow in the world did this:
Turn into this?
Ugh. I know it may be blasphemy for my generation, but I think I hate Madonna.
Stay tuned, actual blogging is in the offing. Pinky swear.
