This is why I am a cat person

Written by Jen on November 19, 2010 – 8:47 pm

I’m a huge fan of most animals and love dogs. But you’ve got to respect cats, and this is why they’re my pet of choice. Cats do not give a fuck who you think you are. They reign.

Staying warm

Written by SBF on November 19, 2010 – 12:23 pm

Now that I have to worry about things like a gas bill, my threshold for being uncomfortable is broadening. Until this house, I’ve always lived somewhere that rent included gas, electric and water. Which meant lots of air conditioning in the summer, and balmy heat in the winter.

But this nice brick house I live in now is pretty much always cool. Heat on 80 and we still need sweaters on the first floor. So, duh, we don’t keep the heat that high. My mother says that along with appetite control, taking hoodia gordonii helps her stay a bit warmer in the winter. I don’t know if that’s true, seems like a nice side effect if it is, but for now I’ll just stick to the sweater.

Early Turkey Day

Written by Jen on November 18, 2010 – 9:12 am

What is cookingI’m going away with my mom for a mini break for Thanksgiving this year, which is very exciting. I definitely need some rest and relaxation. However, I was kind of sad to miss making my own Thanksgiving dinner. So, P and I decided to have what we’re alternately calling Early Turkey Day and/or Faux Thanksgiving this weekend.

At the grocery store this morning I was surprised to see how many people are already doing their shopping. I doubt they’re all doing dinner a week early. I’ll try to post my menu once I get started.

Unsmiling face

Written by SBF on November 17, 2010 – 7:22 pm

Not that unsmiling is a word, of course. But I felt like today I spent being just that. Unsmiling. Like every time something nice would happen, it got tainted. This morning I went down to the kitchen to see the boyfriend bought a box of my favorite cereal, but we didn’t have any 2% milk (that’s the only kind I can stand in cold cereal).

Or, I was having a good hair day, but my skin is having problems again. So, instead of enjoying my cute hair, I’m off researching the best treatment for acne, once again.

But, on the bright side, my new laptop comes tomorrow, so I plan to have a great day.

Shrimp and Eggs

Written by SBF on November 16, 2010 – 10:19 pm

This is my new favorite quick dinner. For some reason I always seem to have 1 cup or so of smallish IQF shrimp in the freezer. They’re on sale a lot, usually the 51-60s, and are very useful for things that should have shrimp, but don’t need big expensive ones. I use them most for seafood risotto and spring rolls.

Anyway, I got home a bit late tonight and didn’t feel like spending more than 10 minutes cooking. I remembered my friend A talking about shrimp and eggs, I had the stuff, and knew it would only take a few minutes to prepare.

I thawed the shrimp running it under cold water while I checked out a couple of recipes online. Happily, my food guru Mark Bittman had a great recipe to get me started. I, of course, made a few alterations.

Less ‘splodey is better

Written by SBF on November 15, 2010 – 10:29 am

So, you know how a computer will work perfectly right up until the day after your warranty expires? Yeah, happened to me. My laptop experienced a catastrophic failure. Calling what happened an explosion isn’t as much of an exaggeration as you’d think.

That’s what I get for buying something quickly, rather than going for the custom laptop I wanted to get.

Thank goodness for credit cards and a very very good backup habits. I did a full disk image the day before it died, so I’m not losing anything. Plus, we have two other computers in the house I can use while I wait for my new one to arrive.
