Breakfast Slop

Written by SBF on February 17, 2010 – 10:15 am

I’m just stopping in to share a quick recipe with the class. I woke up this morning in kind of a bad mood, and wanted some comfort food. The boyfriend left for work early, so I was only cooking for myself.

Basically I spent 10 minutes pulling things out of the refrigerator, trying to combine them into something that would fit in one skillet and raise my cholesterol as well as my spirits. Here’s what I ended up with (no measurements as usual). This meal is unlikely to help with any weight loss plans you might have, obviously. Read more »

Baby Names

Written by SBF on February 16, 2010 – 2:02 pm

No, don’t get excited. I am not pregnant, thank the Lord. No, one of my good friends just found out she’s having a baby, and is currently obsessed with baby names. We had lunch today and so I have them on mind too.

Anyway, instead of looking for information about Richard Willich like I was supposed to, I spent some time helping her.

Instead of providing ideas, I told her names to avoid. Like the top 10 baby names in the country recently. You want to stay away from those. What are they you ask? Well, Google helped me find them

Boys: Jacob, Michael, Ethan, Joshua, Daniel (hey boyfriend!), Alexander, Anthony, William, Christopher, Matthew.

Most of these are actually fine. They’re classic names.

Girls: Emma, Isabella, Emily, Madison, Ava, Olivia, Sophia, Abigail, Elizabeth, Chloe

Madison? Really? That’s just weird. Must be Gossip Girl’s fault. Everyone wants their kid to sound like a prep school snob.

Always Keep Learning

Written by SBF on February 15, 2010 – 9:26 pm

Considering the current state of the economy, its important to make sure you have as much going for you as possible. Whether you have a job or not, you will look better to your current or prospective employers if you can show them you are willing to go the extra mile.

That’s not just working longer hours or doing your best work. It means learning more about your industry and issues. And it means education. No matter what your financial situation or schedule, there are places to go to learn.

One great example is the Western Governors University, an online school specially designed to deal with the needs and issues of working adults. They have a range of programs to suit the needs of most people, and can help you earn an online degree, or just add some important expertise to your resume.

Awwwww

So, I think I’ve mentioned that Little Sister (who is not my actual sister) got laid off at the end of last year. She’s been among the zillions trying to find new employment when none really exists. Crappy, no?

Anyway, she’s amazingly organized so I set her up with some temp work one of my client needs. No big deal, but every bit helps. So yesterday I came home to flowers and a card from her thanking me. Very sweet, my girl. Now someone give her a real job before her broke ass moves in with us.

Please don’t use the ‘s’ word

Written by SBF on February 12, 2010 – 2:07 pm

You know, “snow.” Shudder. I am really tired of looking at snow, thinking about snow, hearing about snow and thinking about snow. News stories about snow far away from here almost had me kicking the television this morning. I want to hear about Florida Keys vacations, desert winds, anything but snow.

I just got back from the grocery store and had a lovely conversation with a very boring man about the future of actuaries. Dull as mud, but a welcome change from all the you know what talk. Maybe I should paint something so I can watch it dry.
