bell hooks
Written by SBF on January 21, 2010 – 10:26 amIn honor of my girl Les, some of my favorite bell hooks quotes. And something extra…
“The academy is not paradise. But learning is a place where paradise can be created.”
“… feminist solidarity rooted in a commitment to progressive politics must include a space for rigorous critique, for dissent, or we are doomed to reproduce in progressive communities the very forms of domination we seek to oppose.”
“Usually, when people talk about the “strength” of black women they are referring to the way in which they perceive black women coping with oppression. They ignore the reality that to be strong in the face of oppression is not the same as overcoming oppression, that endurance is not to be confused with transformation.”

Heidi who?
Written by SBF on January 21, 2010 – 8:55 amWhy is some girl I’ve never heard of all over the news for having tons of cosmetic surgery? After extensive (30 seconds) research I see she’s on The Hills and has a jerkwad boyfriend who has a flesh colored beard. Creepy.
Anyhoodle, I get that it’s kind of gross what she did, but is it really news? This week? Lame. I mean, I don’t care what her new cup size is, and maybe the kinds of weight loss diet supplements she uses is useful for some, but I can’s escape this crap.

Best mail ever
Written by SBF on January 19, 2010 – 12:23 pmI am officially the happiest person on the planet. Well, probably not, but I’m the happiest I’ve been in a long time. Why? I got the best piece of mail ever today. What is it? Just click here to see. I’m kidding. I’ll tell you.
My best friend from high school sent me a copy of a video we made for senior week. 10 of us in a tiny house for 5 days, just acting ridiculous. This was before the reality TV explosion, so we didn’t really know what to do with a camera all day. Mostly we danced and made faces. The boyfriend and I have watched it three times and can’t stop laughing.
If it wouldn’t mean my death I’d put the whole thing on YouTube.

Party time?
Written by SBF on January 18, 2010 – 11:46 amAs regular readers will know, J and I have birthdays just over a month apart. Hers is in 2 weeks, so the planning has begun. This kind of thing is easier when in the same city, but we’re still pretty close. Since we’ve met I always imagined we’d be swapping parties and gifts for the rest of our lives, from bottles of liquor now to childcare books in a few years, then best anti wrinkle face cream samples, and eventually adult diapers if we’re lucky.
Regardless, we are talking about doing something for both birthdays together whenever she can get back down to DC. Probably dinner and drinks as opposed to the classic drunkathon. We are going to be 31, have to grow up sometime.

Another moutain
Written by SBF on January 17, 2010 – 7:04 pmAs usual I’ve found myself buried under a mountain of work at the same time. I was trying to blame it on my vacation, but that’s not really the problem. Somehow I end up having 3 or 5 deadlines within days of each other. Doesn’t matter how long the project is or which clients I’m working for, it always ends up the same. Read more »

And away we go, again?
Written by SBF on January 16, 2010 – 8:38 pmWe’ve only been home from our last trip for two weeks, but I’m already itching to get away again. January is such a long month for me work-wise, and adding the extra from while I was gone is exhausting me. It doesn’t help that since I was doing vacation research for months I’m getting tons of emails, brochures etc about caribbean vacation deals.
The boyfriend says he thinks our next trip should be somewhere cold, but I don’t see the point of going somewhere cold when it’s cold where you live.
