Disability
Written by SBF on September 2, 2009 – 7:08 pmTo determine if you are disabled in the sense of qualifying for government benefits, you must go through a process involving five main questions. They are:
1. Are you currently working? If you are with a minimum amount of earnings, you are not eligible.
2. Is your disability severe? It must interfere with your ability to work.
3. Is your disability on the official list of disabling medical conditions? Things are easier if it is. Otherwise a determination must be made before you can qualify.
4. Are you capable of performing work you did in the past? Even if you have a serious condition, if you are able to perform work you had in the past, you are not eligible.
5. Are you able to do other work? If you can perform some kind of work you are not eligible.
There are, of course, other considerations and special circumstances that may change your eligibility, but this is a quick overview of what you should know about social security disability.
