Things anyone can write about

Written by SBF on July 23, 2009 – 4:41 pm

You don’t have to be an expert to write authoritatively and effectively anymore. Obviously. There are plenty of things that most people know about, but want to hear from others on as well. Some ideas:

Simple cooking recipes, cleaning tips, shopping ideas, gift giving, television reviews, discount searching, pet care, restaurant reviews, relationship advice, funny or embarrassing personal stories, home repair basics, party planning, music recommendations, vacation ideas, budget fun, photos, and one of the most popular, weight loss pill reviews.

So, if you’re looking for a writing gig, don’t worry about trying for something you don’t know. Use what you do know.

Not the same thing

Written by SBF on July 22, 2009 – 7:56 pm

As we discovered after opening a package from the boyfriend’s best friend from college, there’s a tuxedo shirt, and there are tuxedo shirts.

The difference? One is a shirt designed to be work with a tuxedo, usually white with small pleating down the front. The other is a t-shirt that looks like a tuxedo. The former is fine for many lovely occasions. The latter is an abomination much loved by unfunny people who think they’re hilarious.

I’m just saying.

Is Up Down Now?

Written by Jen on July 22, 2009 – 2:01 pm

It fills my heart with cold dread when I have to refer to Chris Matthews as the voice of reason in any situation. It’s even hard to type now.

This vid is kind of long, but worth watching. Hateful morons. That is a very dangerous combination.

For background, the issue here is the right wing “birther” movement. They claim that President Obama is not eligible to be president because of ever-shifting reasons related to where he was born. Copies of his birth certificate have not dissuaded them. You can read more here and here.

If I rolled my eyes any harder I would dislodge my contacts where they would almost certainly travel to my brain and kill me. See, just thinking about these idiots is making me dumber.

Top 5 Things to Consider in a Personal Injury Attorney

Written by SBF on July 21, 2009 – 6:11 pm

If you are in the unfortunate position of needing a personal injury attorney, here are 5 things to remember.

1. Experience matters. Find someone with a long, varied history of personal injury work. The process will be hard enough on you without having to deal with and wait for an attorney that doesn’t know this field well.

2. Find someone local. Getting recommendations from friends or online reviews is fine, but find someone you can meet with in person easily. If you live in upstate New York don’t hire a lawyer in Miami, look for a Rochester personal injury lawyer.

3. Shop around. Set up meetings with as many attorneys as you can manage. See who you like, likes you, and feels the best. Don’t be pressured into committing to anyone until you are ready. This is not an area to make a snap decision.

4. Research. Don’t just take the attorney’s word on their record and history. That will only get you the good stuff. Check state bar associations and the internet for information about the attorney.

5. Make sure their practice matches your case. If you’ve got a small simple case a firm of a few attorneys may be fine. But if you’re looking at years of process and millions of dollars at issue, bigger is probably better. You need a lawyer with the resources to do everything you need – when you need it.

This is not a public service announcement

Written by SBF on July 21, 2009 – 2:01 pm

Well, it sort of is. For anyone wondering about the recent proliferation of commercials and information about mesothelioma:

Mesothelioma is a rare cancer caused by exposure to asbestos, a product used for all manner of things, especially construction, until its carconogenic (cancer causing) properties were discovered. Mesothelioma effects the mesothelium, protective sacs that cover organs in the human body.

Treatment of mesothelioma depends on the location of the cancer, but in general, Mesothelioma treatment consists of one or more of the most common cancer treatments: surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy.

Advice from me to you

Written by Jen on July 20, 2009 – 7:14 pm

Using sass for good rather than evil, here’s a quick helpful hint for “allegedly” racist cops in Cambridge, Massachusetts:

Before you give the business to a black man outside a fancy house, consider 2 things.

1. There’s black people in the White House now. We are not putting up with that shit.

2. Any man suspected of breaking into his own house when he’s actually trying to unlock a stuck door is not putting up with that shit.

3. There are a lot of rich black people in Cambridge, many of them affiliated with Harvard. They are for real not putting up with that shit.

XOXO,

Jen

P.S. You haven’t seen uppity until you’ve seen Harvard black uppity.
