Brazil and Beauty

Written by Jen on June 30, 2009 – 1:27 pm

Racialicious is starting a three part series about beauty and Brazil. You should read it.

My boyfriend’s ex-wife is Brazilian and we’ve talked a bit about beauty standards and how it seems recently all American’s think about Brazil is that every woman there is “model hot.”

Go, learn.

Summer Vacation

Written by SBF on June 29, 2009 – 1:45 pm

Not that I’ve been around much, but I’m going to be completely gone for the next week and a half. I’m going on vacation with my family (shudder). I’ve scheduled a few posts so you all have a little content because I think J is really busy right now too. More soon.

Oh, before I go I wanted to let you all know that I’m trying desperately, and failing, to think and talk about other things than the new house. I’m obsessed, and having a great time. This weekend I spent four hours online shopping for outdoor pillows and a fire pit. Maybe my next career will be interior design. Except I’d make everyone have things I like. Perhaps not. Anyway, enjoy the weather if it’s summer where you are, and spend as much time as you can with fabric swatches, they’re soothing.

What does love look like?

Written by Jen on June 23, 2009 – 8:22 pm

For the first half of my 20s my closest friends were a few years older than me. That meant as I started rolling into the end of my 20s, a lot of weddings were happening. For some reason 28030 seems to be the target marriage age for DC do gooders. Now the younger ones are starting to catch up, and another round of weddings has descended. Which is fun, but makes me thoughtful.

Now I have personal and political issues with marriage that make it a rather unlikely prospect for me, and I’m fine with that. But it doesn’t keep me from celebrating the happiness of people I care about and enjoying their open bar receptions.

Last weekend I went to one such event with my uh… boyfriend isn’t the word, but for lack of something better that will do. The history of our relationship is somewhat relevant, so if you want to hear it, I’m including a short-ish version after the jump.

Anyway, the wedding was fun, and after about a bottle of prosecco each the bride and I were having one of those drunk heart to heart conversations. She told me that she didn’t think she’d be able to spend the rest of her life with her brand new husband, but figured she’d give it a shot. Neither is religious and they don’t plan to have kids, so that seemed fine with me. The fact is, marriages end, it’s probably good to be realistic about it going in.

On the way home I was telling Paul about this and he thought it was super weird. It was unusual, but not weird to me. The fact is, love can look different for everyone. What and who we love is different, why can’t how we love be the same? When pressed I’m likely to admit that I love Paul, but I just moved 150 miles away from him, and rarely even describe him as my boyfriend. And the fact is, this is one of the best relationships I’ve ever been in. It works for us. Just like moving in together and being revoltingly cute works for SBF and Dan.

As long as you’re happy and no one is getting hurt, figure out what kind of relationship you want and doyour thing.

Wow, wow, wow…

Written by SBF on June 22, 2009 – 7:40 pm

This afternoon the boyfriend and I were doing what he refers to as “important things.” He even does the air quotes, such a nerd. We were trying to figure out some home insurance details balancing the needs of the owner and ourselves, unmarried and financially unmingled as we are.

Suddenly our serious talk was interrupted by the news that two metro trains had collided, and people could be dead. As of writing this 4 people died and dozens more are injured. Click here for more details.

Right now we’re checking on anyone who might have been on those trains, making sure everyone is fine. It struck me that the accident happened right by the metro station J used to live next to, and thank goodness for the first time that she’s not here. (Even though she was in town this weekend and didn’t call me.)

Another True Blood parody video

I know they’re silly and meaningless if you haven’t seen the show, but they give me a giggle. I get them from The Vault.

Boring, boring, boring

Written by SBF on June 14, 2009 – 12:39 pm

I just realized this was one of the most boring weekends I’ve had in a long time. The boyfriend and I both worked way too much last week so we canceled all weekend plans to relax. That meant ignoring the throngs of people all over town for Pride, and numerous food and booze related events.

Instead we spent the last couple of days laying around watching TiVo and generally being boring and lazy. The most interesting conversations we had were about how to find the most effective diet pill (hint: check your pants and heart-rate) and arguing about who would have to put shoes on to get the neighbor’s Sunday paper that always ends up on our steps (I won).

Whew. So much excitement. I need a nap.
