George Tiller murdered in his church

Written by Jen on May 31, 2009 – 1:11 pm

I’m in shock right now. I haven’t posted here about my background with the pro-choice movement, but it’s extensive. And George Tiller was a hero to me and the thousands of women he’s helped throughout his career.

He had been shot twice before, and went right back to work helping women. The third time was the charm.

From the New York Times:

The shooting occurred at around 10 a.m. (Central time) at Reformation Lutheran Church on the city’s East Side, Dr. Tiller’s regular church.

Wichita police said that the shots were fired from a handgun in the church lobby during the morning service. The authorities gave few details, but said they were searching for a powder blue Taurus made in the 1990s that had been seen leaving shortly after the shooting. They said witnesses had described seeing a white man departing.

Horrifying.

Update: As of writing, 2:20 pm Eastern, police are looking for:

…white male who was driving a 1990s powder blue Ford Taurus with Kansas license plate 225 BAB. The vehicle is registered to an owner in Merriam, which is in the Kansas City area.

Note: I’m turning off comments on this post because I couldn’t stand something disgusting.

The Boyfriend makes me sick

Written by SBF on May 31, 2009 – 11:12 am

I mean that literally. Coming back from Memorial Day weekend he had something we both thought was allergies, until it disappeared 24 hours later, until it jumped over to me and knocked me on my ass for the last few days. Swell. Hooray for cohabitation.

Aside from feeling like crap I’m doing well. The house is coming along, though I keep losing things with all these damn rooms. I will probably never see my sunglasses again.

In other news we’re deciding what to do with the basement. And by deciding I mean sending each other email “suggestions.” Right now the battle is home gyms v. pool tables. Both of our sets of parents have offered to help us buy whichever we decide on.

Bad Girls

Written by Jen on May 30, 2009 – 3:07 pm

Sorry for the lack of posting, folks. We’ve been busy. I just started a new job and SBF is sick and still unpacking. We’re planning on doing a recap for the weekend we spent together, but in the meantime, it was kind of like this, but blacker.

Drinking, drinking, drinking

Written by SBF on May 22, 2009 – 8:02 pm

J and I are together right now, drinking an unconscionable amount of booze. In theory we’ll be heading up to New York in the morning, but I don’t see how that’s possible with the hangovers that must be in our future. Good times, good weekend!

Please note that even though she can barely stand, J could still tell me how to spell unconscionable.

More entertaining than snoring, certainly

Written by SBF on May 16, 2009 – 10:08 am

Apparently the transition of living together and being in this house is having an interesting effect on the boyfriend.  He’s been talking in his sleep – pretty much every night this week. And I think it’s hilarious. He says the most random things that I’ve taken to writing them down to see what they mean to him awake, if anything.

I hear him because for some reason my bladder has shrunken to the size of a walnut, and I’m getting up to pee at least twice every night. Annoying.

Anyway, here are some of the phrases he’s busted out with, none of which he admits knowing any meaning of:

  • cheese creep market
  • diving over school
  • lincoln purple-pink
  • silly dots all in line
  • rake ponytail
  • girls long long

Any shrinks out there with theories are welcome. Read more »

More troubles for my clients

Written by SBF on May 14, 2009 – 4:36 pm

It’s hard being a consultant who works closely with people for a long time. I feel like their troubles are mine, but I can’t really help or be there for them. On the bright side, feeling like their troubles are mine is much better than their troubles actually being mine. So there’s that.

One of my clients told me today that they found out one of their HR people had been embezzling funds for over 2 years. They don’t know how much yet, but it looks like sizable amounts. So messed up.

The company is relatively small and seems to do most of their hiring through word of mouth and people who know staff members. So it’s possible they missed something in her background. I’d think to pull something like that off for so long you’d have had some experience before, like most serious crimes. J would be more of an expert in that area (solving and information about crime, not committing crimes… I think).

Oh well, they’re instituting a policy of doing an employee background check for everyone, myself included.Which means I’ll probably disclose the existence of this blog to them.
