Sad, sad news

Written by SBF on February 28, 2009 – 12:30 pm

I am a very sad girl. I found out this week that my best girl J is leaving town. She’s been my friend for a long time and my partner in crime for months now. So crappy. To be as dramatic as possible I offer a clip from Beaches.

Mardi Gras

Written by SBF on February 24, 2009 – 4:29 pm

beads

Happy Fat Tuesday, all. To hell with Valentine’s Day, this is a holiday I can get behind. My plans for the night are dinner with J and friends and then a truly obscene amount of drinking.

I drove down to New Orleans twice in college for Mardi Gras, and well, I can’t really remember anything that happened, but from the photos I had a great time. The only problem is the drive back is a bastard. It’s long, and having a car full of tired hung over idiots makes it a thousand times longer.

I know I should say something about the rich cultural history of New Orleans and blah blah blah, but I just like excuses to drink a lot. You’ll notice a deep connection to St. Patrick’s day as well, and Cinco de Mayo.

Why respect cultures when you can appropriate their holidays as an excuse to binge drink?

Oscars or whatever

Written by SBF on February 23, 2009 – 7:09 pm

I didn’t actually watch the Oscars because… well, honestly because I was drunk and “fell asleep” by 7 pm. Must remember that I can’t start drinking at noon. Ever. Anyway, I got all I needed to know thanks to the internet, so it didn’t matter.

I did however arrive at the boyfriend’s apartment a little while ago to see him watching this. You should too.

Oh, and if you didn’t see Milk, you should watch this documentary on Hulu, The Times Of Harvey Milk.

Crossing the comfort food line

Written by SBF on February 18, 2009 – 4:09 pm

Comfort food is great, duh. Right now I’m looking out the window at this wet yucky weather, avoiding work and really avoiding apartment hunting. So instead of doing what I’m supposed to, I’m thinking about dinner. I’m not going to the store, so options are a bit limited. I think I might do smothered chicken with rice and some sort of broccoli-related thing.

Anyway, while looking a round online for recipe ideas I found my new favorite gag inducing website, aptly titled This is Why You’re Fat. It’s photos of the most disgusting huge food craziness ever. Just the names of some of the foods are enough to turn my stomach, but in an entertaining way. Some personal favorites are Sloppy Joe On A Krispy Kreme, Corn Dog Pizza, Deep Fried Cheese-Stuffed Ground Bacon Burger and so on… Just go check it out.

There really isn’t a thin line between comfort food and this insanity. I wouldn’t want to eat 95% of this stuff, or even see it in person, but damn if I don’t love reading about it. Though, it does kind of kill my appetite.

Not a good way to wake up, I assure you

Written by SBF on February 14, 2009 – 11:26 am

Last night we went up to Baltimore to visit some friends of mine. They’re really fun people and booze in Baltimore is a lot cheaper than here, so you can imagine how it all ended. Suffice it to say no one was driving anywhere, so the boyfriend and I crashed at their house.

At around 5 am I awoke to what sounded like a dance party of some kind. Turns out it was S watching television and dancing around the living room. In her drunkenness she forgot we were there. Here’s what I walked out to see.

Just another Saturday

Written by SBF on February 12, 2009 – 6:29 pm

In my house Valentine’s Day is about as important as Arbor Day. Well, it would be if it was possible to leave my apartment, turn on the television or visit a website without having to hear about it. Basically, I don’t care. For those who enjoy soft candle light, over-priced menus and crappy candy, good for you, enjoy the holiday. Personally, financially, practically, emotionally, politically, all other “lly” wise, no thank you.

Now, I do love a celebration. And considering the fact that I’m going to be 30 in a month, I’m just realizing there needs to be a lot of planning, ASAP. What’s a fun thing to do for a big birthday? I can’t think of anything that doesn’t involve a bar… not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Update: It was brought to my attention that this post seems like I hate romance. I do not. I just don’t think there’s anything particularly romantic about obligatory things like chocolates and flowers on Valentine’s Day. Romance to me is doing something personal and meaningful because you want to, not because it says to on a calendar.
