Let the merrymaking commence

Written by SBF on January 28, 2009 – 8:32 pm

Oh, I am so excited. In honor of J, this is how excited:

Ha! Anyway, J’s 30th is this weekend and we’re off to drink and be merry at the beach. Fun fun fun. Plus, I’ve got a couple of good books to read, and an air card for my laptop so I can keep up with a couple work things. So, the next 4 days will be party 85% of the time, which is probably a bit more than we should be doing. Hooray!

This will be the first time I’ve spent more than a couple of hours with J’s not boyfriend, so this should be interesting. Rumor has it he makes strong drinks, so I’m sure we’ll get along very well. My boyfriend is kind of in love with him, I don’t really understand why, something about tattoos and football.

See ya, suckers!

Insert lame 8 is enough joke here

Written by SBF on January 27, 2009 – 9:42 pm

I’m sure everyone’s heard about the woman who just gave birth to octuplets. It seems all of the babies are doing relatively well, which is amazing. Eight babies? Wow.

From Reuters

The woman, who astonished a 46-member medical team at a suburban Los Angeles hospital by delivering eight babies when ultrasound images had shown seven, was also said to be doing well.

The six boys and two girls, born nine weeks prematurely, are only the second set of octuplets known to have survived birth in the United States.

“The first test is the breathing test and … they are breathing on their own,” Dr. Mandhir Gupta told reporters. “They still need some support with oxygen but only through the nose so most of the work of breathing is done by themselves.”

Go medical science, right? The very idea is terrifying, I have to admit. Read more »

Quick post: favorite search terms

Written by SBF on January 26, 2009 – 6:55 pm

Hey I just figured out how to see what search terms people type in that land them on this blog. Nothing useful, obviously, but some are funny/horrible. Here are my top 5 favorites.

“make a black friend”

Isn’t that sweet? Like there’s a guide? Tips? Who knows… Sorry, won’t give out the secret here.

“i hate sassy black women”

Me too. Those bitches. Oh wait, that’s me. Never mind. Love ‘em.

“sassy jones”

I hear it’s good barbecue sauce, but I don’t really know anything else. Except great name.

“whatever” “enough” “thing” “happy”

I know these make more than 5 but they’re just single words, lay off me. Who searches for “thing” ? What thing are you looking for? Weird.

Don’t let me interrupt your fight

Written by SBF on January 24, 2009 – 5:40 pm

I woke up this morning with a strong desire to do pilates. For the first time in months. I remembered that I had a couple of passes left for the place in J’s building, so I called to see if she was around. I went over and they were busy, so I just decided to hang out with J for a while.

What I didn’t know is she had her not boyfriend over and they were in the middle of a 20 hour fight. I’m pretty sure the point of not being boyfriend and girlfriend is to avoid just that, but whatever.

She and I are sitting on the couch playing with the cat and talking about work crap. Not boyfriend is in the kitchen. Every few minutes he comes out and they kind of glare at each other, then go back to what they were doing before. So romantic.

After about 20 minutes of this I realize I’m going to need some coffee or a nap. I know J doesn’t drink it, but I figured she might have some for the boy. So I ask. Yikes. Of course, somehow I managed to blunder right in the middle of the fight. Something about what the difference is between being accommodating and being subservient. You can imagine how well that went over.

Long story slightly less long, I left them to it and took a long walk instead of pilates. J called to apologize. They’re both from Philly so they fight 80% of the time. Just reminded me that while he is a terrible sick person my boyfriend is great because we rarely take bad moods out on each other. Read more »

The urge to rearrange is growing

Written by SBF on January 23, 2009 – 7:42 pm

The boyfriend isn’t feeling well, so he spent most of this afternoon sleeping on my sofa. I’m not sure why he and his germs couldn’t rest at home, but whatever. I told him as long as he didn’t bother me he could stay. And aside from the occasional groan and argument with the cat over who got the most blanket, he didn’t. When I took a break from work to see how he was doing he noted that he still can’t believe I actually work from home. That I’m able to concentrate. Honestly, it still surprises me too.

One problem I do have is spending so much time in my apartment makes me want to change it, constantly. On conference calls I’ll be staring at my bookcases wondering if some other organization scheme would be better, or if the television should be in the corner.

The combination of my need to rearrange things and my deep abiding love for shopping are dangerous. I spend 40 minutes in the Container Store once without buying anything. I was just imagining how I could use all the overpriced organizational stuff. Sigh. How do people not get fixated on little things like light bulb warmth and sizes of area rugs? Wish I knew. Anyway, I think the mind wandering actually helps me work. I obsess for a few minutes then go back to what I was doing. Much better than barely being able to concentrate for hours on end. Though, I have those days too, of course.

Lately I’ve been thinking of renting some office space. Just a vague notion, but it’s there. I’d like my home to be my refuge from work again. If I don’t do it I think there’s a full paint job in my immediate future.
